With the Bachelor degree from Xiamen University, Dr. Mingliang Zhang took his PhD training in Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. Majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Dr. Zhang’s research at that time was to better understand the mechanism underlying the control of telomere and telomerase, which play the critical role in aging, cancer and genome stability. Dr. Zhang’s collaboration with others has answered long standing questions in telomere field. The serial of works have been published in Nat. Struct. Mol. Biol., Mol. Cell Biol., and Biochem J., and are highly cited and recommended by international professional websites. Dr. Zhang took his postdoctoral training in The J David Gladstone Institutes, where his research is to properly use the chemical tool to better control diverse biological processes, specially the cellular reprogramming toward neural lineage. As the all-chemical approach to cell fate control is challenging, Dr. Zhang and colleagues performed combinatorial chemical screening which led to the identification of a cocktail of nine components (M9) that efficiently reprograms defined fibroblasts into induced neural stem cell-like cells (ciNSLCs). The resulting ciNSLCs closely resemble primary neural stem cells molecularly and functionally. This study not only establishes an effective chemical approach for generating neural stem cells from mouse fibroblasts, but also reveals mechanistic insights into underlying reprogramming processes. This finding provides potential clinical therapeutics for treating neurodegenerative diseases in the future.

Mesenchymal stem cells and their clinical implications in tissue regeneration
